@Stephen: While NEA may be leading the fight to oppose punitive laws and funding models, they have disappeared in the struggle against NCLB and RttT. VAM used to evaluate teachers, charter schools, excessive use of high stakes testing.

Pat, if you are wondering what NEA is doing for this NY city school, you should know NY cities school fall under AFT (American Federation of Teachers). As an NEA Board member, I assure you NEA is leading the fight in Congress and on the national front regarding opposition to punitive laws and funding models. The bigger concern is when did the Democratic party leaders and our Democratic President decide to sell out public schools to a corporate reform agenda? NEA can certainly do more to insure non-corporate Democrats get elected, but that is job every Democrat needs to focus on even if their top issue is job creation, the environment, health care, or transportation. While we might be able to get a few progressive moderate Republicans elected, I see no hope for the Republican party or their party leaders in the next 10 years.

I have posted this so many times I forget how many. Where is the NEA? Do they not care about learners and teachers? As a past member of 5 unions, 4 with AFL/CIO and the 5th NEA I must say the NEA is the most cowardly, useless organization I have ever belonged to. I rue the dues I paid for 31 years.

Nice. I like the coin-tossing and dice-rolling metaphor. Brings to mind images of pie-tossing, an atmosphere of carnivale, which is what we’ve got going on here, yes?

Perhaps rather than measure teachers by students’ outcomes, we need to measure our culture by how we treat our children. Not doing so well there, are we?

More productive alternatives outside the false dichotomy? Yes, let’s do discuss! Suggestions?

Wow! Until I saw the photo I didn’t really realize how big the stones are. I have seen similar arrangements in a yard on the Olympic Peninsula, but there, much smaller stones have been used. And some of them seem to have been in place for a long time; even those with more than two stones. I haven’t seen the builder at work or examined them closely, so I can’t preclude the use of glue etc.

Re the Mexican stone piles. It would appear from the picture that many of the stones’surfaces are covered with vugs. Perhaps those small holes accumulate moisture and as that moisture evaporates it changes the weight distribution of the stone, disturbing the delicate balance.

We were doing much of this in Kennewick 20+ years ago and many teachers were trained. I added the Personal Intelligence component maybe 10 years ago and taught a pilot group of Paco High students (with Debbie Duggan). It worked beautifully, but as you know, schools are not receptive to this kind of thinking currently. Learning to fill in bubble tests is more important than learning to think and to manage your own learning.
